High School For Girls

Believe, Achieve, Thrive

English

That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”

F. Scott Fitzgerald

All students of English acquire knowledge and skills that enrich their lives forever. We aim to enable our students to become confident, accomplished, and versatile users of English in all its forms. We want to make them effective communicators, whether they are speaking or writing, as well as enthusiastic readers and to foster in them a life-long love of the written word and of learning.

In preparation for their English Language and English Literature GCSE the girls will encounter a wide range of prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction texts, from different literary time periods, which ask them to develop their skills of communication, close reading and critical thinking.

We also offer English Literature at A Level, which teaches students how to analyse complex ideas, apply critical theories, develop research skills and construct and defend an argument- all vital and transferable life skills.

We are always keen to engage students in activities beyond the classroom, including theatre trips, talks from visiting authors, the chance to write for the local newspaper through the Young Citizen, a whole school Spelling Bee, involvement with BBC School Report, participation in The National Theatre’s New Views playwriting programme, as well as various creative writing and drama clubs.
