High School For Girls

Believe, Achieve, Thrive

Government and Politics

‘Anyone who says they are not interested in politics is like a drowning man who insists he is not interested in water.’

Mahatma Gandhi

In a period of such exponential change in the world of politics students cannot fail but to be intrigued by the shifting political landscapes both in the UK and abroad and, as Gandhi highlights, they need to have an awareness of what these changes potentially hold for society.

In the High School Sixth Form Politics Department students study the role of the government and politics in the UK and in the USA.

In Year 12 they study two units: Unit 1 People and Politics and Unit 2 Governing the UK.

In Year 13 they study a further two units on the USA: Unit 3 Representative Processes in the USA and Unit 4 Governing the USA.

The main focus of our study centres on us helping students to understand political concepts and institutions and then applying them to topical examples.  As such, students are able to gain a broad understanding of what is happening in the world today and how they can understand or affect the situation through the existing political structures.
